About

How we choose

A short, unglamorous explanation of who writes this, what we will and will not say, and how the money works.

What this is

The Fine Address is an independent guide to exceptional places and spending well on travel. Not spending the most — spending well. The difference matters. A great deal of what gets sold as luxury travel is simply expensive, and a great deal of what makes a trip memorable costs nothing at all. Our job is to tell you which is which, in enough detail that you can act on it.

Every guide answers the same three questions. Where should you actually stay, and in which room category. When should you actually go, including the weeks to avoid. And what would you regret spending money on. If we cannot answer all three about a place, we do not publish a guide about it yet.

How we decide what to recommend

We start from the assumption that you are clever and busy. That means no throat-clearing, no listicles padded to twenty entries when six are worth knowing, and no writing around a weakness. If a famous hotel has thin walls, a mediocre breakfast, or a beach that disappears at high tide, that belongs in the guide.

We are equally direct about the opposite. When a property genuinely earns its rate — when the service is anticipatory rather than performative, when the location saves you an hour a day, when the room category difference is worth the upgrade — we say so plainly and explain the reasoning, so you can judge whether it applies to your trip.

The test we apply to every recommendation: would we send this to a friend who was spending their own money and would tell us afterwards if we got it wrong?

How we make money

Through affiliate links. When you book a hotel, flight, tour or insurance policy through a link on this site, the booking partner pays us a small commission. You pay exactly the same price you would have paid going direct — the commission comes out of the partner's marketing budget, not your pocket.

This model only works if the advice is good, which is precisely why we protect it. We are not paid to feature a property, we do not accept payment for coverage, and no partner sees a guide before it publishes. If the honest recommendation is the one that earns us nothing, that is the one that runs. Our full affiliate disclosure sets this out in detail.

Photography

The photographs on this site are licensed for commercial use and credited to the photographers who took them. We do not pass off images of one property as another, and where a photograph is illustrative of a destination rather than documentary of a specific room, the surrounding text makes the specifics clear.

Corrections

Hotels change. Chefs leave, refurbishments happen, a beloved beach club gets bought and ruined. If you find something out of date or simply wrong, tell us and we will fix it and note the change. Get in touch.
