Bali's problem is not overdevelopment, it is that most visitors stay in the twenty percent of the island that is overdeveloped. Ubud's centre is congested; the valleys fifteen minutes north and west of it are quiet, green and full of villas with private pools at prices that would not buy a hotel room in Europe. The extra half hour in the car is the entire difference.
