French Polynesia is the more dramatic of the two great overwater destinations: Bora Bora has a mountain at its centre and a lagoon the colour of glass, where the Maldives has flat sand and better reefs. Polynesia costs more, takes longer to reach and rewards island-hopping. The Maldives is easier, cheaper and better underwater. Choose on those terms, not on photographs.
