The Maldives is not one destination but roughly 150 private ones, and the difference between a good week and a disappointing one is decided before you arrive: by the atoll you choose, the transfer that gets you there, and whether the house reef is actually worth swimming. Seaplane resorts feel remote and cost more; speedboat resorts near Malé cost less and get you into the water by lunchtime. Neither is wrong, but they suit different trips.
